What to know
Where there's room, a tree can be felled in one piece. In most gardens there isn't, so the tree surgeon climbs or uses a lift and takes it down in sections, lowering heavy pieces on ropes so nothing lands on the house, fences or the neighbours' side.
Some trees need a felling licence from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine before they can be cut down. There are exemptions, for example for trees within 30 metres of a building and trees in towns, and trees under a tree preservation order or in an architectural conservation area need the council's permission. A good tree surgeon will check this with you before starting.
Never try to fell a tree near overhead lines yourself. Tell us if there are wires near the tree, so the tree surgeon can arrange for ESB Networks to make the line safe first.
Ask whether the price includes taking away the timber and branches, and whether the stump will be left, cut low or ground out.
